How you can solve the Rubik's cube

Recent 3×3 world records

Within the last month, both the 3×3 single and average world records have been broken. Max Park broke Yusheng Du’s long standing single world record of 3.47 with an amazing time of 3.13. Also, Yiheng Wang dropped his own world record from 4.69 to 4.48. The close proximity of these records has been shocking to the cubing community and there is much debate as to how far these records will go.

Just last year, people didn’t think a sub-5 average was possible but now Yiheng has achieved it 3 separate times. Now people wonder if a sub-4 average will happen. While it seems like it could be possible in the near future, only 7 people in the world have even got a sub-4 single officially. To achieve a sub-4 average, someone would need at least 2 sub-4s in the same average. Because of this, it would require an unbelievable amount of consistency for someone to get a sub-4 average. While a few people are probably capable of this, not only would the scrambles need to be very good, but they would also have to not make any mistakes over 4 out of the 5 solves in the average.

In terms of a single world record, in my opinion, it is more likely to happen in the near future. It is just a matter of a fast cuber getting lucky enough scramble and finding the right solution. Max Park’s world record solution had 33 moves, so to break the 3 second barrier on that scramble it would take just over 11 turns per second. An even luckier solution of 27 moves would only take around 9 tps. This is more feasible, it just depends on when someone capable gets a good enough scramble, which could take a long time.
